Baavra Mann

Baavra Mann
A beautiful track from the film Hazaaron Kwaishein Aisi. I don't know what this style is called (thumri, perhaps?) but like Sufi, it also has its roots in Islamic music.

I hear all kinds of influences here... shades of South Africa (background vocalizations) and Japan (some of the strings). Then again, I'll freely admit I don't know what I'm talking about.
LOL ... I don't know about the African influences, but you're bang on about the Japanese-sounding strings. I think the instrument being played is the saarangi, a string instrument very similar to the traditional ones of Japan (hence the faimilar sounds.) I think it's related to the xylophone.

I like that!
Acutally, it sounds like someone is playing a few notes on a santoor, right there at the opening and then at the beginning of each rhythmic cycle, but that's just a wild guess - could be the sarangi alone.

Am guessing that the scale being used here is similar to a lot of Japanese scales/tunings.... Like here (sample is Japanese, though played by Americans).

I love it!
